Suriname, september 1945

. Kamp is Aik Pamienke III ( Sumatra) A portion of the civilian internment camp, Kampong Makassar, where conditions a short while ago were indescribable but since this photograph was taken allied authorities have taken over and many improvements have been made and medical supplies more plentiful. In the foreground a Dutch woman is seen preparing a primitive meal over an open fire.( Naast haar haar zoontje Frank Dippel.) Up to a week after the Japanese capitulation (on August 15, 1945) it was strictly forbidden to do ones own cooking or make any open fire without Japanese agreement. Punishment, as for so many other 'inobediences', was harsh and brutal. All the (sparcely) rationed food had only to be distributed through the central kitchen and bakery. NI 6065
