Supreme Allied Commander with Generals released for Japanese Prison, U.S. Army General of the Army Douglas Mac Arthur (center), Supreme Allied Commander stands with British General Sir Archibald E. Percival (left) and U.S. Lieutenant General Jonathan M. Wainwright, former chief of Staff to General Mac Arthur, at his headquarters in Yokohama, Japan's principal seaport. General Mac Arthur had invited both men, to be present at the enemy's formal surrender, which took place aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay, south of Japan's capital, on Sept. 1, 1945. General Percival had been forces to surrender to the Japanese at Singapore, and General Wainwright in the Philippines.
